No Dog Left Behind

By V Witt

That is, without... pet sitters, or at least asking Fido what he thinks about the whole deal!

To the delight of dog lovers, the status of the dog has risen to such new heights, that he is welcome to go almost anywhere in the world with his owners. Airlines, hotels, motels, restaurants, doggie day cares, and the like have tuned in to the desires of dog owners, by offering services that make it a much more dog friendly world.

That being said, there are certain conditions and situations where it's not in the best interest of your dog to be taken along when you go somewhere. Pet sitters can be good solution when you need another option.

What I'm getting at is, some dogs don't like to travel, or have adverse reactions to travel. Even a short car ride can cause motion sickness for some pets, so a much longer vacation-type drive could be a truly miserable experience for Fido! In this type of scenario, most likely your dog would be happier in a boarding facility. But better yet, if Fido had anything to say about it, he would choose to stay in his own pad - and bring on the pet sitters!

Aside from bad reactions to travel, most pets are creatures of habit and do not like to have their routine disrupted. They love their couch, their back yard, their familiar dog bed, familiar smells and of course their regular eating schedule.

Even with the best of intentions, an owner could be subjecting their dog to a whole range of disturbing and even confusing experiences when they take him out of his normal routine. If your dog falls into this category, this may be the ideal time to consider pet sitters for your next trip.

Other occasions that may be perfect for hiring a pet sitter, are vacations or business trips that take the family out of the country. Although, dogs are welcome to fly the friendly skies if they meet airline requirements, the planning does need to begin at least six months in advance. Not only that, but personal or business trips sometimes come up at the last minute, with no chance to fulfill the pet rules needed for international travel. However, if you do want to take your dog with you when you travel overseas, finding a pet sitter at your "destination" is one option that will make it a lot easier to go sightseeing while you're there.

In fact hiring a pet sitter can be a win-win consideration for any trip at home or abroad, or during the festivities of the holiday season, because it allows you accept the type of invitations that your dog wouldn't enjoy, without feeling guilty. Plus, your dog can have some company and a nice walks while you're away.

Pet sitters are usually very flexible and will fit in with your schedule, but if you need one during the holiday season, be sure to book early. Some also offer house sitting services, making them available not only to your pets every day, but also to water the plants and keep an eye on things in general.
